Weight Training Supplements ?

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Hi I was just wondering what weight training supplements I should be taking for my goals and build. I’m 5′10” (about 178cm), 13st (about 85kg). Im quite a stocky build and have always been naturally physically strong. My goals are to increase/build strength, power and increase my muscle size (Not ridiculously like body builder size, more like Boxing, MMA, Rugby big. But i’m already quite chubby and don’t want to buy creatine because I know it has a lot of carbohydrates in it and do not want to become any fatter! So I purchaced some Maximuscle Promax Extreme as that sounded like what I needed. (But it is pretty expensive at £40 for about 900g). Basically I want a supplement that will increase my strength, muscle size and not make we pack lots of weight on. It is very confusing lol for a beginner to know what he/she needs so I’m hoping someone can clarify it for me, I know its quite along post so I’m gonna shut up now and wait for my answers, thanks for reading :)

Coxy, you can buy creatine monohydrate without carbohydrates—at least in the USA. But I presume the same is true for the UK. And creatine solution taken during resistance training is clinically effective for boosting muscle hypertrophy. Further, the short answer to your question is GABA, which is an inexpensive amino acid powder that quadruples growth hormone levels in male athletes. You might find useful the following clinical evidence in support of techniques to help males gain height, bone density and muscle hypertrophy so you can get an early start on growing as big as you possibly can.

Like it or not, heightism is real, especially when it comes to jobs, social networking and dating, and people favor tall men. So it pays for males to grow as tall as they can. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heightism

This eHow article suggests drinking 3 glasses of milk daily, but not all at once, and getting to sleep before 12 midnight and sleeping for at least 8 hours per night:
http://www.ehow.com/how_4545098_grow-taller.html

Consider the following clinical evidence to reach your maximum potential.

MAXIMIZING HEIGHT AND BONE DENSITY

1) Take a daily multivitamin with micronutrients. See below for recommended micronutrients to improve height.
2) Take 1000mg (1g) of calcium carbonate supplement daily.
3) Take 3g of GABA (an inexpensive amino acid supplement) at least once daily to quadruple baseline growth hormone levels.
4) Engage in regular low-risk vibrational physical activity, such as plyometric training, volleyball, basketball, short-to-medium range jogging.
5) Practice meditation for 20-30 minutes regularly around dusk in order to reduce stress and improve hormonal profile for growth (cortisol can inhibit growth).

PubMed primary clinical journal articles:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18091016 – 3g GABA quadruples growth hormone levels.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15755856 – We conclude that calcium carbonate supplementation of adolescent boys increased skeletal growth, resulting in greater stature and bone mineral acquisition.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16426962 – The micronutrient-fortified beverage was beneficial in promoting growth and decreasing duration of common illnesses among middle-class residential schoolchildren who had adequate energy and protein intakes.

MAXIMIZING MUSCLE HYPERTROPHY

1) Take 3g of GABA at least once per day. (already linked above) – 3g GABA QUADRUPLES growth hormone levels!
2) Post-Training Meditation – http://www.ergo-log.com/meditationhormones.html
3) Have lean protein for breakfast: eggs, steak, yogurt and/or a protein shake
4) Stock low-fat, low-carb, protein rich foods and snacks such as yogurt, milk, hard-boiled eggs, lean marinated chicken breasts and unprocessed, unsalted nuts – make your own lean & clean trail mix with almonds, cashews, pecans, walnuts, dried fruits and yogurt or dark chocolate. Don’t let your baseline blood sugar trough while you’re recovering from workouts; keep feeding the furnace with protein at least once every two hours.
5) Avoid drinking any form of cola, at all. It inhibits protein synthesis, which means you won’t grow much muscle while drinking it. http://www.ergo-log.com/milkcola.html Drink milk and fresh-brewed green tea instead of colas, soft drinks or alcohol. "Improved endurance capacity following chocolate milk consumption compared with 2 commercially available sport drinks."
6) Use a twice-daily combinatorial protein and ALA supplement offset from workout times (i.e., morning and night) but drink creatine solution during resistance training
7) Take quercetin to reduce post-workout inflammation and boost mitochondrial biogenesis: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quercetin
8) Learn the basics of training if you haven’t already—http://exercise.about.com/cs/exerciseworkouts/a/weight101.htm—and learn how high-quality rest is at least as important as exercise for anabolism
9) Use clinically proven, evidence-based weightlifting techniques including muscle confusion, eccentric loading and optimal intensity for maximum ROI. Concentrate especially on "the big three": squats, deadlifts and bench press, for maximum returns for effort.
10) Keep up-to-date about muscle and fitness by bookmarking the best, most objective online sources (PUBMED, etc.) and mix in alternatives such as hemp protein, vibrational and TENS/EMS techniques ( http://www.medword.com/MedwordStore/PCP/EMS_truth.html ) from time to time to see whether you get good results

What other supplements can I take besides kelp and flax seed to benefit my body?

Friday, July 16th, 2010

I’m kind of a health freak, very healthy diet, strict workout plan, and some supplements mainly flax seed and kelp. Besides these, what other natural supplements could I take to benefit/detoxify my body long term?

Highly nutritious foods you should consider: sprouts, chlorella, spirulina, paprika, turnip greens, mustard greens, kale, garlic, brewers yeast, raw almonds, ground flax seeds & chia seeds.

For optimal health, I advocate a low carb way of eating. As long as you have <9grams carbs per hour,
you will maintain insulin control, which will balance hormones & allow your body to function properly. You shouldn’t gain weight, no matter the calories, because insulin (the ONLY fat storage hormone) isn’t activated.

I personally believe in using fat as fuel instead of carbohydrates. Fat is totally benign in the absence of insulin. There aren’t enough calories in vegetables & fruits to fuel the body, if you get enough calories from carbs to fuel the body, then you maintain an almost constant high insulin level with roller coaster blood glucose levels. I recommend fats from butter, coconut, olives, nuts, fish & meats, chia seeds & flax seeds.

When you restrict higher carb, lower nutrition foods, it becomes much easier to greatly increase vegetables in your diet. Change your mindset just adapt it to low carb -
replace bread with lettuce
replace pasta with cabbage
replace rice with cauliflower
replace potatoes with brocolli

Carbohydrates trigger insulin (the fat storage hormone). Protein triggers the fat burning hormone glucagon.

High carb levels trigger insulin which unbalance other hormones, promote inflammation, weight gain, hunger. Controlling insulin levels will balance out other hormones and allow sex hormones (testosterone in men) & human growth hormone (HGH) to be produced naturally so lean muscle will be gained even without exercise.

Paprika – 1 Tablespoon = 20 cal = 71% DV Vit.A – 8% DV Vit.C – 10% DV Vit.E – 14% DV Vit.B6 – 9% DV Iron & others way too many to list.

Brewer’s Yeast Powder – Two tblspns. provide a whole lot of nutrition! 158% RDA Chromium – 90% Selenium – 88% B2 – 80% B1 – 50% Copper – 50% Niacin – 40% B6

Chia seeds sound so expensive but 1# will make 10# food – Amazon.com has couple lbs. for $16 shipped to you. I buy in bulk (24#) from getchia.com for $5.83# with free shipping.

Chia seeds – 3.5 oz is nearly 500 calories, half calories from fat (high in Omega3 fatty acids) 38g fiber 151%DV & 16grams of COMPLETE protein for 6grams carbs & 63% DV Calcium – 95% Phosphorus – 23% Zinc – 9% Copper – 108% Manganese.

Faux tapioca – 2 cups of water, 5 scoops of low carb whey protein powder, stir together & add cup of chia seeds, after they have started to absorb the water, add in 2 cans of coconut milk & sweetener if you like and mix it all in. Can be eaten after an hour but will be better tomorrow. Cream a pkg. of cream cheese into a can of pumpkin and add to the faux tapioca for an even more nutritious pumpkin pie pudding.

Ground flax seed (4 Tbsp) 1/4 cup water, sweetener, cinnamon & mix in a raw egg – let sit 10 min. to absorb liquid, put some cream cheese in the middle & nuke 2 minutes. Suggested for daily fiber needs.

I make a "porridge" as suggested by Dr.Mercola – low carb whey powder & water, I add ground flax seeds, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, coconut milk, tahini (ground sesame seeds) & raw egg. All seeds & nuts are raw & soaked to germinate them.

Flax seed – 3.5oz – 534 cal – 65% calories from fat (high in Omega3 fatty acids) for 2gram carb – 27g fiber 109%DV – 26% DV Calcium – 64% Phosphorus – 29% Zinc – 61% Copper – 124% Manganese – 36% Selenium – 98% Magnesium – 32% Iron – 110% Thiamin – 9% B2 Riboflavin – 15% B3 Niacin – 24% Vit.B6 – 22% Folate – 10% Vit.B5.- 39% Potassium

Raw nuts are living and full of the energy of life and should be capable of building a tree. Roasted nuts are dead & they may still provide some nutrients, but none can compare to the nutrients and enzymes from a live food.

Unfortunately, raw does not necessarily mean living.

Commercially sold almonds are now required to be pasteurized turning a live food into a dead one. You can not sprout an almond that has been irradiated. I buy my almonds direct from growers off ebay. I get 20# for less than $3# including shipping.

Almonds- 3.5oz – 575 cal – 72% calories from fat for 10gram carb & 26% DV Calcium – 48% Phosphorus – 21% Zinc – 50% Copper – 114% Manganese – 67% Magnesium – 21% Iron – 14% Thiamin – 60% B2 Riboflavin – 17% B3 Niacin – 131% Vit.E – Potassium 20%

Sunflower seeds – 3.5oz – 81% Magnesium – 18% Potassium – 584 cal -11gram carb – 9g fiber 34%DV – 8% DV Calcium – 66% Phosphorus – 33% Zinc – 90% Copper – 97% Manganese – 76% Selenium – 29% Iron – 99% Thiamin – 21% B2 Riboflavin – 42% B3 Niacin – 67% Vit.B6 – 57% Folate – 11% Vit.B5. – 166% Vit.E

Dried Cilantro 1oz – 49% Magnesium – 36% Potassium – 35% DV Calcium – 13% Phosphorus – 9% Zinc – 25% Copper – 89% Manganese – 12% Selenium – 66% Iron – 23% Thiamin – 25% B2 Riboflavin – 15% B3 Niacin – 9% Vit.B6 – 19% Folate – Vit.A 33% – vit C 264% – 476% Vit.K

Why do people hate Twilight? ***REAL ANSWERS ONLY***?

Friday, July 16th, 2010

I’ve been trying to understand non-Twilighters’ distate for the series. I don’t understand how they’re not well-written. I’ve heard people say Stephenie’s writing is extremely awful. What’s awful about it?

I’ve heard people say that her vamps are weak and are like "fairies." Why is that? Why is approaching something differently so awful? Vampire lore has been around for SO long but the details have very seldom deviated from the simple formula that everyone has accepted: uncommonly beautiful, strength, speed, no sunlight, drink HUMAN blood, keep away from humans, ruthless killers, evil, sometimes special powers (glamor, shapeshifting etc) and sometimes can’t come into a human’s home unless invited etc. But there were a few changes throughout literature and pop-culture. Angel was cursed with a soul. Vampires came out of the coffin to live known by humans and have a blood supplement to erase the need to kill or drink human blood in True Blood and the book series that inspired the show. I haven’t heard such awful things about Buffy and True Blood that I have about Twilight. Why are Stephenie’s differences in the age old vampire formula met with such hostility? It’s as plausible as anything else. Vamps don’t go out in the sunlight because their skin sparkles like diamonds (like marble has that faint shimmer in it) which would give them away as non-human inspiring the idea that vamps would burst into flames. Why would they burst into flames anyway? There’s no biological reason they’d burn just like there’s no biological reason they’d sparkle so what’s the problem?

How is Bella shallow? Because she finds Edward beautiful? Vampires have always said to be inhumanly beautiful. She’s not changing that part of your sacred formula. Civilians find celebrities beautiful. Civilian men find gorgeous civilian women beautiful sometimes to the point they can hardly speak in front of them. Men in movies when they have all that makeup on and are looking ripped are generally found beautiful by red-blooded women. It happens! So what, it means she’s human!

People say Bella is selfish. WHERE would you ever get that?? She’s willing to die to save her mother from James, she offered herself to the Volturi in place of Edward and Alice, was willing to kiss Jacob so he wouldn’t go off and kill himself (okay yeah she was stupid to believe it but she’s extremely naïve so I guess I can let that slide), she was willing to die just to give birth to the baby everyone around her wanted to kill and she was willing to fight the entire Volturi court who are older than her, outnumber her crowd AND are better fighters to keep her new family safe. Not to mention lying to all her human family and friends to keep the Cullens’ secret. How is any of that selfish?

I want a serious, honest, well thought out answer with specific examples–not "she can’t write" or "Bella’s shallow" or simply “it just SUCKS!!” with a bunch of bad spelling and grammar after it. I want REAL reasons. I want to have a real conversation about this. I’m not one of those “Twi-tards” who will go off and cry while I slit my wrists and watch the movies. I have yet to find someone who can have an intelligent conversation about this.

With Twilight I was up set about it because of another film was going to come out that was about vampires “The vampires Apprentice”, and twilight stole its thunder.

Some people where pissed because they have been dreaming of this movie to come out, because it was based on a comic and a book series. the first book came out in 2000, compared to twilight that came out in 2005. Twilight has only 3 or 5 books, while “The saga of Daren Shan” has 12. “The vampires assistant” it was horrible and I cried about how they ran it over, put the car in reverse and ran it over again.

I have seen Twilight and found that the story moved too fast, the acting was pathetic, they over did the make-up, and the sparkling of Edward, I did not fully understand WHY Bella is in love with Edward… maybe because she is an outcast and so is he? any way I have seen the movie was very unsatisfied. In the end I said to myself, “Is this the movie that everyone was going nuts over?” “I should have watch 27 dresses.”

Where is the moral of the movie? At the end of every movie there should be a moral, there was none in “Twilight” did not. Anyway it seemed like anyone that can make a movie like this. I only “love” movies that put effort into it, that went all out and made a beautiful masterpiece that will leave a tear in your eye, and a standing ovation when the credits starts rolling… not making you feel pissed off and having yourself wanting your money back.

Even though they where not aiming for a movie award (which it did not deserve) they could have picked people that could actually act.
