Scott Marker is back with more answers to your questions about what it takes to me an MMA referee. He talks about:

-does he take into consideration the crowd when he is standing in the ring
-how bad does a cut have to be for you to stop it

@IrishRhavin Yeah …
@IrishRhavin Yeah the ref would have to decide if he thinks the guy threw it without even thinking or not. Sometimes you clearly see them throw it out of anger even tho they know they cant. other times its automatic and its only a warning.

This is probably a stupid question, but the 12 to 6 elbow is illegal when it’s to the body as well as the head, correct?

I received my blue …
started refereeing the same year. Trained for others mma matches that my opponents backed out, got older and then figured that the safest place in the cage is to be the ref
I received my blue belt bjj, Pedro Sauer, in 1997. Trained no-gi for years and then put my gi back on and received my purple belt bjj, Keith Owen, 2009.
Fought in the first mma / nhb match in Idaho back in 1996, won
Also, I am a black belt in Kenpo Karate, Skip Hancock, received my black 1991, promoted since.

Will you stop a fight if the fighter is not tapping but it looks like they are in a lot of pain? Example is the GSP vs. Dan Hardy fight. Thanks Scott.

@TheAdrenalineEffect I guess its because he can’t avoid it as easily, what i was more interested in is the upkicks that occur when a knee or both are on the ground, sometimes there is just a warning, sometimes a penalty and sometimes a stoppage, how does the ref decide? Is it damage, intention or a mixture of both

Scott thank you for responding on the doctor stopage. I was also wondering why your not in the UFC? You seem like a very experienced ref. You deserve to be getting paid big time. Thanks again Scott.

@Ah4b to my …
@Ah4b to my understanding, it’s very easy to apply too much torque and injure your training partner/opponent before they feel any serious discomfort or pain.
At least that’s why I am told they aren’t allowed until higher rankings in my dojo, simply for safety reasons.

@IrishRhavin You can upkick a guy whos standing over you. But if he has a knee or both knees on the ground then you cant. I think it should be allowed regardless because the top guy is allowed to hit you so why cant you upkick em just because their knee is on the ground? haha
