MMA XL PRESENTS: HOW SHOGUN DEFEATED MACHIDA’S KARATE
Seven-time karate champion João Gilherme Bendly, was responsible for mimicking Lyoto Machida’s fighting style as a sparring partner for Shogun Rua.
In an interview with www.Tatame.com, Bendly said the following.
I memorized Lyoto from the top to the bottom so that I can impose myself in front of Shogun, because what he needed was the karates timing, the defense techniques of Lyoto. This timing is different and requires years of practice in Karate and thats exactly what he needs. I adapted my game to Lyotos and did what he does in front of Shogun to do this specific training.”
I think that Lyoto wont change much his style because its been working very well for him. You cant change ten years of practice in four months. I guess he will still be defensive since hes really good at it, counter attacking. He may work on this timing and be more prepared just as Shogun. But I think Shogun will win.”
“I think it will be like the last fight, the kicks from Shogun are certain and I think this fight will be aggressive, rather than the previous one.”

I just admired how they put 4oz (?) gloves on and do what looks like maybe a 60% spar. I was respecting the professionalism of their impressive sparring session.

That guy doesn’t fight anyway like Machida. Shogun was basically practicing for a less timely and aggressive Karate fighter. Fortunately for Shogun, Machida fell to pressure and the last fight and the unsatified mma fans and actually became like this karate ultimately playing into Shogun’s gameplan and well… you saw what happened… You should of stuck to your defensive style Machida but you didn’t and fell to your own specialty… a counter.

It’s easy to immitate this fool if u practice karate. specifically red dragon karate cause they move just like that. machida only loss because he was trying to be an aggressive fighter when he’s not. get a clue kiddos. karate is extremely effective if used properly.

I liked the fact that Shougun stopped hitting Machida after he knocked him out.

LHW is by far the most interesting div in the UFC specially now that Shogun is the champ, it really opened up tons of matchups, and it will be very interesting to see where Machida goes from here…!
