Amazing pictures from Switzerland show where “jetman” Yves Rossy gave this incredible flying display, using a tailor-made jet pack. The aviation enthusiast leapt from a helicopter and performed a series of aerial acrobatics above the Alps. He then joined two jet planes in a synchronized flight. To synchronise their flight paths the jets reduced their speed to 220 kilometres per hour (137 miles per hour), which put their engines at a point close to stalling. Rossy’s previous aerial feats include flying the English Channel and looping the loop around a hot-air balloon.

Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is personally overseeing the country’s efforts to create one of the most advanced fighter jets in the world. He stopped by the Zhukovsky airfield outside Moscow to watch a test flight of the Sukhoi T-50 jet. The plane features an array of technical and design innovations. Sukhoi, the company behind it, says it’ll be a few more years before the fifth-generation jet is ready for mass production.

French military jets are already flying over the country, to enforce the UN backed no-fly zone. Foreign leaders meeting in Paris said they’re ready to do whatever it takes to stop Colonel Gaddafi targeting civilian areas. Reports from Libya, suggest forces loyal to Gaddafi are carrying out attacks on the rebel stronghold city of Benghazi, despite the government ceasefire. RT’s Paula Slier is in Tripoli.

At a meeting in Paris, French president Nicholas Sarkozy said his country’s planes are now over the town of Benghazi, preventing any attacks against civilians. RT correspondent Daniel Bushell reports

The magnitude-8.9 offshore quake triggered a 23-foot (seven-metre) tsunami and was followed for hours by more than 50 aftershocks, many of them more than magnitude 6.0.

Fighter jets swooped low over Cairo on Sunday in what appeared to be an attempt by the military to show its control of a city beset by looting, armed robbery and anti-government protests. Minutes before the start of a 4 pm (1400 GMT) curfew, at least two jets appeared and made multiple passes over downtown, including a central square where thousands of protesters were calling for the departure of President Hosni Mubarak. Police could be seen returning to some streets nearly two days after virtually disappearing, creating a security vacuum only partially filled by the presence of army troops backed by tanks at key sites around this city of 18 million people. After days of escalating chaos, gangs of armed men attacked at least four jails across Egypt before dawn Sunday, helping to free hundreds of Muslim militants and thousands of other inmates.

A former Russian martial arts fighter with a history of violence and extremism has turned up in Norway, after simply walking out of a psychiatric ward last month. Now, Vycheslav Datsik, who was also a prominent member of a banned nationalist party, is seeking political asylum.

A Russian mixed martial arts fighter who is also a member of a banned nationalist group has escaped from a psychiatric hospital. Members of the extremist movement to which he belonged say police will never catch Vyacheslav Datsik alive. Security at the mental institution from which he fled was too lax to hold him, and staff say Datsik should never have been sent there.

Despite some complaining that the UK’s election excitement is overshadowing the Victory Day memorials, Britain is remembering World War II with the rest of Europe. The war was a time of unprecedented change in society, with women taking jobs they’d never been allowed to before. In the UK they took to the controls of military aircraft to ferry them to the frontline, including the legendary Spitfire.

Russia’s brand-new, state-of-the-art fighter jet has made its second test flight. Officials say the T-50 has so far performed brilliantly. The “progressive front-line aviation complex”, as the plane is officially known, is Russia’s first attempt to create a complete “stealth” fighter. Its features include an advanced onboard computer which controls many of the plane’s systems, giving the pilot more time to focus on the mission. The plane is being developed by Russia’s Sukhoi company, with serial production planned to begin in 2015.
